FAZ:

It’s not just FAZ: the BBC’s headline is „Biden challenges Trump with ‘Buy American’ economic plan„. In 2020 this is the US Democratic Party’s strategy.

My attention was drawn initially not by the photo but by the headline, which I read, along with the article, in the context of reading numerous German commentators on the US’s withdrawal from connection with Europe. People like Fischer and Joffe ponder the path of Germany and the EU in a world of „two and a half“ superpowers. In a world where the US jousts for hegemony with China and economy-poor nuclear weapon-rich Russia struggles to reassert its relevance rather than rebuilding bridges to Europe the US plans to „Build Back Better“, to „buy American“.

Is it just me, or does Biden’s „Build Back Better“ tend to remind people of Melania Trump’s „Be Best“?

I sat looking at this and was struck by the realization that quite a lot of the photographs of life in the US feature people who are obese. This isn’t at all limited to European media, as I commonly see it in the American press as well. These are odd images.

Guardian:

Spiegel:

Washington Post:

On Thursday, former vice president Joe Biden snatched the populist mantle back from Trump. The Post reports: “Joe Biden unveiled a proposal Thursday to spend $700 billion on American products and research, challenging President Trump’s ‘America First’ agenda with a competing brand of economic nationalism and setting the stage for an election-year showdown over the country’s financial future.”

Biden’s plan is aimed squarely at workers based on a message of “fairness.” As he explained on Thursday during a speech in Dunmore, Pa., the presumptive Democratic nominee seeks “an economy where every American enjoys a fair return for their work — and an equal chance to get ahead.“

1936 Democratic Party Platform:

12 years of Republican surrender to the dictatorship of a privileged few have been supplanted by a Democratic leadership which has returned the people themselves to the places of authority,…

We have begun and shall continue the successful drive to rid our land of kidnappers and bandits. We shall continue to use the powers of government to end the activities of the malefactors of great wealth who defraud and exploit the people.…

Monopolies and the concentration of economic power, the creation of Republican rule and privilege, continue to be the master of the producer, the exploiter of the consumer, and the enemy of the independent operator. This is a problem challenging the unceasing effort of untrammeled public officials in every branch of the Government. We pledge vigorously and fearlessly to enforce the criminal and civil provisions of the existing anti-trust laws, and to the extent that their effectiveness has been weakened by new corporate devices or judicial construction, we propose by law to restore their efficacy in stamping out monopolistic practices and the concentration of economic power.
